Arianna C. Nina graduated from Moving Image at AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design in Enschede. For her finals, she created a personal documentary. “It’s about the political conflict between Catalonia and Spain. I decided not to use political footage, but instead try to tell a story from the heart.”

Tell the world what hasn’t been told before

During her time at Moving Image, Arianna learned what she wanted to create and why. “You discover what you want to tell the world that hasn’t been told yet.” Plus, the importance of telling a story in a way that people can connect to them:

“Whatever you create, have your voice in it. I think that’s the most important part of Moving Image.”

Her final work is inspired by her own experiences in the Netherlands. Every time she said she’s from Catalonia, nobody understood why she wouldn’t say Spain instead. “I tried to find a movie that explains the situation there, but I couldn’t find anything. So I decided to make one myself.” She initially started creating a documentary that shows the police brutality that was happening in Catalonia, but then she realized that that story has already been told. “Once I stopped and thought about why I wanted to tell this story, I realized that what’s important is what happened to those people who are there.” With her finals, she wants to tell the stories of the Catalans.

“You end up creating something that is so personal to you. Not just something you can find anywhere.”
