Classical Music

Cello

After 28 years, Jeroen Reuling’s tenure as a lecturer at the ArtEZ School of Music has come to an end. However, we are happy to announce that he will remain affiliated with our conservatory as a regular guest lecturer.
Since September 2015, Karlien Bartels and René Berman have been shaping the main subject with their substantial expertise and energy. Karlien Bartels, who was already teaching part of the course over the past three years, has now also taken over Jeroen’s class. Both lecturers are intensively working together to coach cello students in group lectures and recital opportunities.
Besides the ‘usual’ cello lessons, students in the third and fourth year have the opportunity to choose courses that focus specifically on playing baroque music.

Specific admission criteria for Cello

In addition to the general admission criteria, there are also specific instrumental requirements. During the audition, you will perform at least one étude and a recital piece, unless indicated otherwise. The pieces mentioned are merely examples. You can also opt for other works of a similar level.

Your performing skills will be tested on the basis of:

  • Major and minor scales along with the accompanying arpeggiated triads;
  • Two études such as Duport’s Etüden, Gruetzmacher’s Opus 38 or Lee’s Opus 31;
  • Three recital pieces such as Romberg’s Concerto, Marcello’s Sonata (nos.2 or 5) or Fauré’s Élégie.
