Classical Music - Bachelor - Zwolle

Programme per year

During the first two years of study, you will hone your musical and artistic skills. From the third year onwards, the programme will align more closely with your personal ambitions. You will be given increasing freedom to shape your own study programme.

You will work on your technical and musical skills in individual and group lessons, chamber music, ensembles and year-group concerts. You will attend masterclasses, study independently, play in a band and sing in a choir. This will enable you to lay a solid technical foundation, develop self-confidence and build your own musical vision.

Study coaching

Self-knowledge and resilience are important for every musician. In years 1 and 2, you will work on these skills through study coaching: you will learn how to deal with feedback, criticism and setbacks.

Internship and projects

You will do an exploratory teaching internship and participate in various projects. You can read more about this under Internships and Projects.

Feedback

At the end of each block, you will receive feedback or tests. Throughout the year, you will build a portfolio with reflections, video recordings, feedback forms and articles about works you have performed.

In this year, you will further expand your technical skills. In addition, attention will be paid to pedagogy and teaching methodology. These courses will teach you how to make lesson plans. You will practise teaching with fellow students. You will also delve into various didactic models and theories.

Other musical styles

You will broaden your horizons by deepening your knowledge of a different musical style. There are two ways to do this:

  • You will play in the ArtEZ Modern ensemble. You will then spend a year working on all kinds of contemporary music styles in performances and related lessons.
  • You will take a practical course in the Jazz & Pop programme. The lessons in this course are linked to a performance, for example, at a festival.

In the third year, you are given a lot of freedom to design your own study programme. You will do this through internships and project weeks. The music theory lessons are linked to your specialisation and your personal learning path. This year, you will do an internship at a music school. You can also opt for an internship in the field.

Specialisation

You will refine your ambitions in discussions with your career counsellor and other teachers. You will tailor your study programme accordingly. This allows you to specialise with the help of minors and projects. Examples of projects and specialisations include: conducting, entrepreneurship, composition, song accompaniment, music production, education lab, Hafabra and components of the Music Theatre and Jazz & Pop programmes. You will also begin your research this year.

Future-oriented career guidance

Your career guidance focuses on your future as a musician. You will work with a personal development plan. In a SWOT analysis, you will examine your strengths and areas for development.

The final year consists of an internship or exchange and an elective component. You will conclude the programme with two presentations: one demonstrating your technical skills and one presenting your vision as a musician.

Elective

You can fill the elective with a minor or with the course Professional Skills Plus. For this course, you will organise a presentation outside ArtEZ. You will arrange the location and financing yourself. You will receive lessons in fundraising, branding and project organisation for this.

Technical skills performance

You will perform a number of compulsory pieces and be assessed on your musical qualities and technical abilities.

Finals performance reflecting your musical vision

Your finals performance is about the role you want to occupy as a musician. What is your story? We will assess whether you can convey your artistic vision to your audience. You are free to choose the form of the performance. It could be a piano recital, a multidisciplinary performance or playing with a well-known band. You will receive guidance from an external coach who is active in the field, in which you will examine future opportunities you could take.

Study coaching and yoga

As a musician, you spend a lot of time studying and rehearsing. But how do you do that effectively? How do you maintain balance, gain self-confidence and stay healthy? Our study coaching course gives you the tools you need to do just that. You will also take yoga classes and lessons on how to use your body in a healthy way.

Research

In addition to the research you conduct within the programme, ArtEZ offers additional opportunities for in-depth study. Are you looking for more of a challenge? Then you can participate in the Honours Lab, where you can delve deeper into theories and research related to artistic practice.
