25 Years of Toile-de-Luxe at the State of Fashion Biennale

During the annual State of Fashion biennale in Arnhem, the bachelor's programme Fashion Design at ArtEZ celebrates the 25th anniversary of its iconic Toile-de-Luxe. The programme reflects on a quarter-century of experimentation, craftsmanship and research. A tribute to the process behind fashion.

A tribute to the making process

Toile-de-Luxe became part of the Fashion Design curriculum in the 2000–2001 academic year. The assignment serves as preparation for the graduation collections, but the focus is not on the final product. Instead, experimentation, the making process and artisanal research take centre stage.

Students work with a toile, a prototype garment, exploring shapes, materials and techniques. The assignment reveals how much craftsmanship and research lie behind fashion design. Elements that may remain invisible in a final collection are given centre stage here.

Connected through experimentation and craftsmanship

Over the past 25 years, Toile-de-Luxe has grown into a recognised concept both nationally and internationally. For many alumni of the Fashion Design bachelor’s programme, the assignment forms a shared experience and creative foundation. At the same time, it continues to inspire new generations of designers.

The exhibition will be on view from 13 to 28 June 2026 at the OMA Outdoor Pavilion, as part of State of Fashion’s biennale Available to Promise.
