Specific admission requirements vocals

Pre-selection

The required song from the songlist may be included in the pre-selection videos, but it is not required. If the song from the songlist is not uploaded as part of the audition videos, you will perform it live during your entrance exam.

Voice applicants are required to be accompanied by at least one instrumentalist in at least 2 of the 3 pre-selection videos. Accompanying yourself does not fulfill this requirement.

Audition

In addition to the general admission criteria, there are specific admission requirements for the Voice major. You will prepare five pieces which are different in character and tempo (of which one song must be selected from the songlist). You are free to choose the style of the pieces. You can play any kind of jazz, latin or pop music as well as a mix of various styles. During the audition, you will perform a minimum of one and a maximum of three of the prepared pieces.

Important aspects that can be part of the audition and which will be considered in the assessment:

  • Being able to give your own interpretation to a song
  • Correct pronunciation
  • Good intonation
  • Sense of rhythm and groove
  • Having a medically healthy voice. In case of doubt, a statement from an ENT specialist must be submitted
  • Being able to improvise on simple chord progressions
  • You sing with a microphone
  • Preferably you will play with your own band. If you are unable to bring your own accompaniment, you can hire the ArtEZ student band. When playing with the ArtEZ students, it is key to bring proper song sheets: in your own key, with clear chords and song structure. Please see this info sheet for more information. Before each song you play with the band, you count in with the right feel and tempo
  • At the start of the study you are in possession of your own microphone
