Programme

Programme

Playing with the (He)Arts is a unique collaboration between ArtEZ University of the Arts and Saffier, a healthcare organization in The Hague. Join us for this exciting summer school, which takes place at two of Saffier's ten locations: Domus Nostra and Nolenshage. These long-term care facilities house elderly individuals with Korsakov syndrome, traumatic brain injury, and palliative care needs.

What will you learn and do during this summer school?

Through workshops, seminars, and masterclasses, Playing with the (He)Arts introduces you to new methodologies that combine theory, science, and playful practices. Gain practical experience and expand your knowledge in this innovative programme. This summer school will specifically focus on:

Music, technology and the brain

Have you ever wondered what happens in your brain when you listen to music, or why people with dementia can remember songs from their youth? In this program, we will explain the value of music, technology, and musical improvisation in a way that is easy to understand. You will see how even simple creative impulses can be used effectively when working with people in health care

Arts Education (by artisteducators)

An art education methodology that focuses on integrating trauma prevention, community healing and social integration is going to be presented. It involves using visual art as a form of communication and as a tool to empower people who have experienced traumatic events, social friction, tensions, stress. Within this methodology, you will learn to focus on well-being, self-expression, self-knowledge, and risk-taking.

Music Coaching and Counselling

The Health Care sector is a large complex system made up of many small systems and individuals such as the care takers, doctors, therapists, administrators and the clients themselves. Music Coaching creates the possibility to experience, understand and change oneself in the context of the system in a safe and playful way. You will experience creative team building and conflict resolution interventions and creative self-care impulses.

Dance, embodiment, performance

Residents in Domus Nostra are getting younger. The wish/urge to still participate in social activities and community life is growing. The dance/movement therapists of Domus Nostra have embraced this wish and set up a weekly dance/movement intervention outside the walls of Domus Nostra, in the residential area of the building. Here, the residents are joined by residents from the “outside world”, and together they are involved in the weekly dance/movement sessions. In this workshop, you will be taken by the hand and experience such a weekly get-together.

Theater and the Saffier Houseband

In this masterclass will get a peek behind the scenes how the theater-project that has been taking place in the spring of 2022 came about. Furthermore, the music therapists working at Saffier will elaborate on their work with people with Korsakov syndrom and their specific treatment goals. You get to meet the Accent Houseband of Saffier – an amazing opportunity to meet the residents of Saffier in their performance practice!

Arts therapy and mindfullness

Two of the arts therapists working at Saffier have set up a pilot program on how mindfulness can be integrated in the daily practice of the arts therapists. During this workshop, you will experience a typical mindfulness arts therapy session.

Music and neurorehabilitation

During this workshop, you will learn all about – and apply in practice - music-based interventions for neurorehabilitation after stroke or for dementia. These interventions support the preservation or rebuilding of neurological structures and abilities. You will also learn about the latest research findings within the field of neurorehabilitation and the latest findings in context on art are shared.
