At the ArtEZ Academy of Architecture in Arnhem, you can follow the master’s programme Architecture as well as the preparatory programmes Architecture and Architectural Engineering. The principle behind the programme has remained the same since 1949: you work at an architectural practice while training to become an architect. In other words, you learn and work at the same time.
The programme has operated under the name of Academy of Architecture since 1965. In the 1980s it merged with the Arnhem School of Arts and since 2002 it has been part of ArtEZ University of the Arts. This rich history means you can study architecture at an art academy. The academy is located in the Rietveld building on the banks of the Rhine. The building was designed Gerrit Rietveld, who was not only a world-renowned architect and furniture designer but also a former lecturer.
Among the six Academies of Architecture in the Netherlands, this academy is the highest rated (Keuzegids Masters 2025).
Visual design is at the heart of teaching architecture here. It builds on the tradition of the Arnhem School, which featured well-knonw names such as Bas Maters, Peter Struiken and Wim Korvinus - a visual that continues today.
LOBO is a consultative body of the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences for the Academies of Architecture. Through LOBO, ArtEZ Academy of Architecture meets regularly with other architecture academies in Amsterdam, Groningen, Maastricht, Rotterdam and Tilburg. Their discussions focus on the latest developments in higher professional education and architecture education.
ArtEZ collaborates with other Dutch design programmes through the Archiprix Foundation. Archiprix helps young designers find their place in the profession, strengthens design education and provides a national and international platform. ArtEZ students have won four prizes and two honourable mentions over the past 20 years.
ArtEZ is a member of the EAAE, which connects architectural programmes across Europe. The EAAE is committed to better education, stronger architecture and the exchange of knowledge.
Since 2013, ArtEZ Academy of Architecture has run an international summer school together with the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Strasbourg (ENSAS) and Institut National des Sciences Appliquées Strasbourg (INSA) in France, and Hochschule für Technik, Wirtschaft und Gestaltung Konstanz in Germany. In this programme, students work at the intersection of art, architecture and urban planning on projects around the Rhine. In recent years, the network has expanded to include Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Technische Universität Darmstadt and Università Roma Tre. Each academic year, students take part in a five-day design workshop, collaborating in international teams, attending lectures and joining excursions.
