Arnhem is green and just little rough around the edges. In only 10 minutes you can cycle from the forest to a club, or from your studio to the banks of the Rhine.
You will find plenty of space here – space to move, breathe and be yourself. The city is home to three ArtEZ academies: ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Arnhem, ArtEZ Academy of Music, and ArtEZ Academy of Theatre & Dance.
Arnhem is a compact, vibrant city and has everything close by. You can picnic in Sonsbeek Park, watch a film at Focus or shop in the Fashion Quarter. Students drive exhibitions, performances and markets – sometimes all you need is music and a projector to make a little magic.
Café Bosch and Nelson are popular places to meet up and often has jam sessions. If sport is your thing, the Student Sports Card gives you access to everything from climbing to kickboxing.
You might find your first student room through a notice board at the academy or via classmates. Popular neighbourhoods such as Klarendal and Spijkerkwartier are full of students. Grab a coffee on the corner, chat at the thrift store or sketch in the park. Living just outside the city centre – for example, in Presikhaaf – can save you on rent.
The nearby city of Nijmegen is also an option: one train stop away, with its own lively student scene.
Arnhem has many cultural venues such as Museum Arnhem (free for ArtEZ students), Luxor Live and Theater aan de Rijn. But it’s the intimate exhibitions, pop-ups and informal venues that really bring you up close to the city’s creators.
Arnhem is also known as a fashion city. The Fashion Design programme and its creative community add colour to the city. Don’t miss festivals such as Hoogte80 and Festival Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem.
Arnhem is not a city that shouts from the rooftops, but people who come here often decide to stay. The city opens up little by little – in the park, at an art festival or at a kitchen table in a student house.
