“Judite explores the combination of language, loss, grief, and identity. After losing my grandmother, the person I shared Portuguese with the most, I find myself “deslocada” (dislocated) from my mother tongue, reaching for words that no longer come naturally, and having to translate from what was once mine to what now is much more (English). What follows is an attempt to translate my grandmother’s letters to her dead mother, knowing full well that true translation is impossible. Written in English, a language my grandmother never knew, and now will never know as well, these letters become double failures.”
