Katerina Varella
Katerina Varella

My name is Katerina Varella, I am a queer Cypriot artist, currently completing my bachelor’s degree at Aki Artez Academy in Enschede, Netherlands, with focus on Fine Art Painting. My materiality of practice constitutes as a self-identification tool, due to my vague understanding of self, and simultaneously, a window into the geopolitical contexts that are integrated into my points of analysis.

My focus shifts through the different knots of vagueness, for example, my schismatic and contradicting national identity as a Cypriot. Through painting, I navigate and position through the shame and grief of my land, and alternatively attempt to salvage and preserve the rich cultural heritage and history.

Queerness, and primarily lesbianism, is another focal theme my practice delves upon. Illustrated within the violence of destruction, rotting, choking and mourning, my practice cultivated into a dissection tool of analysis for my relationship to the queer, visualising isolation and internalised homophobia, and progressing its abilities as a vehicle of healing.

The mentioned vagueness of self extends even to the physical sense, as through repeating self-portraits I attempt to comprehend my body amidst constant changing of my physique and body dysmorphia.
