Useful tips for your music audition

Tip 1: Do your research

Familiarize yourself with the audition process. The audition format varies significantly depending on the course. You can find more information about this on the course pages.

Tip 2: Plan ahead

Identify areas where you can prepare in advance. Knowing what to expect in each round beforehand allows you to prepare for upcoming tasks. Sometimes, audition days are close together, so having some extra preparation time is beneficial. Starting early helps alleviate a lot of stress.

Tip 3: Provide a comprehensive overview

Ensure that your preparation encompasses a good mix of different elements, so that the program gets a comprehensive understanding of your abilities.

Tip 4: Practice extensively

Practice a lot. Not only the practical aspects but also consider the theoretical aspects. You can do this alone or with someone else. This will help you approach your audition with more confidence.

Tip 5: Have fun

A common question you hear is whether you need to be very skilled to audition. That's not the case. While having a foundation is helpful, what matters most is whether you have musical ears and if you genuinely enjoy what you do. It's important that you're motivated and have the ambition to develop yourself in music.

Useful tips for your theatre or dance audition

Tip 1: Register on time

Sign up for auditions in advance. Audition slots for some courses fill up quickly. Therefore, check the course's page in advance to see when you can register.

Tip 2: Familiarize yourself

Know what your audition will entail. How many rounds are there, and what is expected of you in each round? You can also check this on the course's website.

Tip 3: Know yourself

Understand why you want to be admitted to the course. What are your ambitions and dreams? This will definitely be asked of you. By having a clear motivation for yourself, you can convey this better.

Tip 4: Prepare thoroughly

Make sure you know your lines by heart. Also, truly understand what your lines are about and which piece they come from. Knowing what you're performing will certainly help you.

Tip 5: You don't have to be the best actor

You don't have to be extremely skilled already. Many people auditioning often have this idea, but try to remember that it's an audition for a course. Therefore, teachers are also looking for a student, not necessarily the best actor or dancer.

Tip 6: Acknowledge your nervousness

It can help to think of your audition as just a lesson you're attending with teachers. And remember, teachers are just people too. It can also help to acknowledge that you're nervous. This way, it's out there, and everyone knows.

Tip 7: See the audition as an introduction

Do you enjoy the classes you're taking? Do you like working with the teachers? This way, you can also discover if the course suits you.

Tips for your admission to an art & design course

Tip 1: Bring everything

It can be vulnerable to show your personal work, but bring everything you've created in your portfolio. Don't throw anything away, especially the things you're not proud of or don't think are good enough. Often, the things you're not proud of or don't think are good enough have a beautiful story. Try not to focus too much on what you think the teachers want to see, but let your own style and personality shine through in your work.

Tip 2: Have a diverse portfolio

Experiment with different mediums. Mix watercolor with charcoal or analog with digital, challenge yourself. With a diverse portfolio, you can show as much of yourself as possible. It's also interesting to write about your interests and motivations.

Tip 3: Prepare your presentation

You're not only going to create a portfolio, but you're also going to present it. Prepare it well. There are different ways to present your portfolio. Research which way suits you best.

Tip 4: Know your motivation

Speak calmly about your work and the choices you've made. Be clear about the reasons behind your work and why you've made certain choices. This will make it easier for you to articulate and show that you're serious about your work and that you have a clear vision in your field.

Tip 5: Enjoy it

Enjoy your admission day, even if it's very nerve-wracking. Remember that you're also there to see if the program suits you and if you're enthusiastic about it. It works both ways!
