As part of the quality agreements, the four-year project Collective Making was initiated at ArtEZ Academy for Art & Design Arnhem, with the main goal of fostering more intensive collaboration among students from different disciplines. Recently, the external project leaders, Annemarie van den Berg and Tanja Koning, have released a festive publication in the form of a newspaper. It is a true celebration of the power of the collective!

The power of the collective

Annemarie van den Berg, one of the external program coordinators and founder of the art collective Pink Pony Express, emphasizes the growing number of students choosing to graduate as a collective and rent shared workspaces. "Strength lies in unity. The power of collectivity extends beyond mere collaboration; it brings more ideas, a support system for shared concerns and uncertainties, and the opportunity to realize larger projects."

About the publication

The newspaper offers you as a student or professional various insights and tools regarding collectivity in art. So, if you want to delve into, broaden, or be inspired by this topic, then this is a real must-read!

How to read

The newspaper has two front covers: the 'Collective Making' section showcases all the programs executed at Art & Design in Arnhem, with ample visual material and insights. When you flip the newspaper halfway, it becomes 'Art is Collective', presenting everything about the eponymous podcast series. In the middle, there is a section with lessons learned. "After all, we are conducting research and, in that context, we like to share what we have learned about collectivity," says Annemarie. The unique concept of the publication reflects the versatility and depth of collective work.

"For us, it felt logical to compile the insights, the joy of creation, and the enriching conversations we recorded under the banner 'Art is Collective' with the online art magazine Mister Motley into a reference work available to everyone," says Annemarie.

Programs and learning experiences

A mural of 16 by 4.5 meters, a weekly exploration along the Rhine, the formation of a temporary collective, rediscovering a building, and radically equal coexistence as the starting point of art education... The programs of Collective Making encompass various activities across different courses, involving collectives, artists, scientists, and even explorers to convey their experiences and skills. The lessons learned emphasize the importance of trusting in polyphony and expanding gestures to strengthen the collective voice.

The power of collectivity extends beyond mere collaboration; it brings more ideas, a support system for shared concerns and uncertainties, and the opportunity to realize larger projects."
