‘What is home?': exhibition by ArtEZ students in Arnhem city hall

ARNHEM - The exhibition 'What is home?' by students of ArtEZ University of the Arts will start in Arnhem's city hall on May 12. With their artistic work, these international students invite visitors to reflect on the concept of 'home' and draw attention to the difficulties they face in their search for housing.

Difficult to find housing
For some of the international students, partly due to problems in the housing market, it has proven extremely difficult to find housing in recent years. Graduates stay in their dorms longer, international students have no network to fall back on and not everyone is waiting for an English-speaking roommate. While housing is an essential condition for participating in society, following your studies and feeling at home.

Creating awareness through art
Together with students, ArtEZ therefore launched a project to draw attention to the housing problem. The courses of ArtEZ are highly regarded internationally and therefore attract international students every year. From the project, a series of events took place that aimed, among other things, to create more awareness about the problems international students experience in their search for housing and to create a community within which students can find and help each other. This exhibition is one of these initiatives and previously took place within ArtEZ during International Student Week last November.

Maarten Bremer, member of the Executive Board ArtEZ: “It is important that our students are given the space to showcase this work at the City Hall. Our students have experienced the housing problem first-hand, and they can now share that experience with their fellow townspeople. Not in words, but in images and objects that touch you and stay with you. Because that is the power of art."

When?
The exhibition will be on display at City Hall from May 12 to June 16. Stop by and also share your ideas about what home is now and what home can be in the future.
