Extraordinary and meaningfull publication

The Journal of Singing is the peer-reviewed journal sponsored and published by the National Association of Teachers of Singing (USA). It is of a high standard: few articles by non-Americans are published, and even fewer articles that focus on jazz and pop. The NATS has a very international membership and the journal is therefore read all over the world.

Despite the fact that education in jazz and pop singing has been going on for at least 40 years, the scientific research that focuses on voice and singing is still mainly focused on classical singing. This is another reason why this publication is important.

Relationship between breathing technique and style of singing

Ineke van Doorn: “In the article I discuss the role played by an efficient breathing technique in singing jazz and pop repertoire. Much has been written by singing pedagogues as well as scientists on the subject of breathing technique for singers. However, there is still little literature that focuses on the relationship between breathing technique and the style of singing. For the article I worked through a great deal of scientific literature, looking at how the results work out in relation to jazz and pop singing and how they relate to my 30 years of experience in this field. In my book ‘Singing from the Inside Out‘ (ArtEZ Press 2016), you will find a practical approach of the same subject.”

Research presentation at Jazz Educators Network Annual Conference

Ineke van Doorn has also been invited for a research presentation at the Jazz Educators Network Annual Conference, which will take place in Dallas in January 2022. It is a large, international conference with around 3500 visitors each year. With three times as many applications as places, it is no mean feat that Ineke was invited to present her research. She feels very honoured indeed.

Subject of her research presentation will be "Vocal Improvisation, a Vocal Approach". Ineke will discuss improvisation education for singers. "Throughout the years, improvisation teaching has been almost exclusively based on the instrumental model. This has the disadvantage that the unique character and possibilities of the voice are overlooked in vocal improvisation education."
