Thijs Segers wins HeArtfund Award 2020

  • Fine Art
  • ArtEZ Prizewinner

Painter Thijs Segers, who graduated from ArtEZ Fine Art last summer, is the new winner of the HeArtfund Award. Thijs makes paintings about being in transit. About time, place and the emptiness and timelessness of those places.

Thijs Segers winnaar HeArtfundprijs 2020

Winning the HeArtfund Award feels like being given armbands: instead of being thrown in at the deep end, I get to spend a year gradually getting used to my new life as an independent artist. Another benefit is a practical equation: no need to pay rent for my studio = less work = more time to paint. Because at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. Painting.

HeArtfundprijs for young painters
Every year, the Hengelo-based HeArtpool foundation supports a recently graduated fine art student from AKI ArtEZ for a period of one year. Previous winners of this award include Liesbeth Piena and Nancy de Graaf. The winners receive support in the form of a workspace (including the cost of rent, gas, water and electricity), a one-off payment and a monthly contribution towards material costs. They also get the opportunity to obtain advice and support at the start of their artistic careers. HeArtfund works in partnership with the Welbions housing association and artists based in Hengelo (Overijssel). The year concludes with an exhibition organised by HeArtfund and a publication of the work made during that period.
