SPOTTED: Frans van Gurp, Master Classical Music lecturer, wins Prix Europa

The NTR/NPO Radio 4 podcast Making an Opera has won the Prix Europa Best European Radio Music Programme. One of the jury’s comments was: “Very detailed in the numerous aspects of narration, the several angles and points of view sum up to a thrilling inside-story of the opera world. This programme is a good example to tell a 'classic' story with new means - and a very special, highly appealing tone.”

Dreaming, believing, fighting, taking knocks and having fun

The idea of making this series of podcasts came from Frans van Gurp, lecturer in Classical Music at ArtEZ. “What does it take to produce a brand-new opera at the highest level?” Van Gurp wondered. “A year and a half embedded with De Nationale Opera provided the answers: dreaming, believing, fighting, taking knocks and having fun!” Over that year and a half, podcast maker Stef Visjager was given unrestricted access behind the scenes at De Nationale Opera. There she followed six young singers during the making of the opera Ritratto by Willem Jeths, which was to open the Opera Forward Festival. She turned the unique, intimate glimpse she got into this complex creative process into Making an Opera, or How to make it in opera, a podcast in 8 acts.

You can listen to Making an Opera via the NPO Radio 4 website and all well-known podcast platforms.

Making an opera credits:

  • Stef Visjager:  script, recording, editing and direction
  • Jair Stein: dramaturgical advice
  • Frans de Rond: mixing
  • Frans van Gurp: executive editor (NTR)
