The Artist Independent

The Artist Independent is a newspaper for every ArtEZ student who is curious about life after ArtEZ. It deals with essential questions such as’Is there a secret to cultural success? Do you have to excel in your profession or is it all about selling yourself? Am I the only one who feels insecure? This newspaper is a valuable compilation of information, knowledge and above all experience from teachers and alumni, among others, who have already taken the step into the professional field.

The Artist Independent

The Artist Independent looks at a variety of careers, provides insight into how to build an hourly rate and discusses the opportunities offered by grants and funds. There is also a focus on dealing with uncertainty and setbacks, challenges that many entrepreneurs face. As well as providing practical knowledge, the newspaper offers support and validation through personal stories.

Is this a newspaper for fourth-year students? Absolutely, but not exclusively! After all, you can develop an entrepreneurial attitude early on.  That’s why The Artist Independent is relevant to any student wondering what life will be like after ArtEZ.

Why this newspaper?

The newspaper is created for two key reasons. First, it serves as an introduction to entrepreneurship education for students. After reading it, students should feel inspired and motivated to learn more. "You want to feel intrinsically as a student: this is something I need, something I want to explore further during my time at ArtEZ." The second goal is to share and leverage the knowledge already present across the various academies and programs. "We all know that things are happening in different places, but the information often stays within the program or academy. With this newspaper, we're making that knowledge accessible to all ArtEZ members."

Helena Hesselink, a recent graduate of the Graphic Design program, thoroughly enjoyed contributing to The Artist Independent: "After graduating as a graphic designer, I suddenly faced a big question mark: what now? The Artist Independent is created to remind you that you're not alone. It offers helpful tools, relatable stories, and, most importantly, motivation. Yes, life after graduation can be tough, but it's also an opportunity to reinvent yourself. I hope this newspaper helps you take steps—no matter how big or small—and gives you a little more confidence in what's possible."
