When I first arrived at ArtEZ straight from high school in a different country, I had no idea how transformative these four years would become. The program proved far more challenging than I anticipated—countless late nights, moments of doubt, and tears shed over projects that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Yet every struggle contributed to profound personal growth that I now recognize as invaluable.
The first three years were intense, demanding everything I had to give. But through this crucible, I discovered not only my artistic voice but also who I am as a person. I formed lifelong friendships with fellow students who shared this journey of creative exploration, and together we supported each other through the highs and lows of artistic development. These relationships became the foundation for my growth from a nervous teenager into a confident adult.
The fourth year brought everything into focus. Finally able to pursue my internship and graduation project centred on my true passions, I experienced what I can honestly say was the happiest year of my life. This culminating experience validated every challenge I had faced earlier.
My internship took me to Tokyo, where I had the extraordinary opportunity to work with Maywa Denki—the innovative company behind the otamatone. This experience was doubly meaningful as it allowed me to reconnect with my cultural roots while staying with my grandmother, whom I had only known through brief visits during my European upbringing. The combination of professional growth and personal rediscovery made this internship unforgettable. I remain deeply grateful to our department head for introducing me to this opportunity.
Looking back, I realize that my initial fear and intimidation upon arriving at ArtEZ were natural responses to stepping into the unknown. The key was embracing vulnerability—actively seeking friendships, taking those first scary steps toward independence, and allowing myself to be shaped by the experience. This openness transformed what could have been an isolating transition into a journey of authentic self-discovery.
ArtEZ didn't just teach me about art; it taught me about resilience, friendship, and the courage to pursue what truly matters to me. Every challenge was worth it for the person I've become and the future I'm now equipped to create.
