Title: Iji

One day, a young boy approached me while I was selling prints as a second-year Comic Design student at ArtEZ in Zwolle.
He told me he had heard he wasn’t talented enough to become what I had become. An artist.
It felt as though I was looking at my younger self. When I was his age, I also dreamed of becoming an artist. It was a difficult goal for someone with a lower level of education someone who, like that boy, was told that such a dream was nearly impossible.
"A mountain far too high to climb."
I lacked the "talent". But as the years passed, one thing became clear: I did not lack any ambition.

As an artist, I like to explore moments from my life through visual storytelling whether in comics or in paintings.
In my semi-autobiographical work Iji, I explore the connection between mountain hiking and the journey of becoming an artist.
A book I wish I could have read in the past 14 years. And a book that I wish for that young boy to read today.
