Ro Smit

Ro Smit’s work unfolds in two big hands lifting you up from the floor. One hand is warm, soft, and gentle as it guards you from what’s outside. The other hand reaches out to you to hold, offering guidance, space, and time for mutuality. Through their work, Ro offers a space and awareness of togetherness. Togetherness means to take care of each other even in difficult times. Therefore, their work is not merely meant for a singular moment in time but already comes alive in the process of creating. They challenge symbols of care suggesting the lungs to replace the traditional heart. By doing so, breathing becomes an act of community. Repurposing used objects is an important element of their methodology to expand the awareness of when care can become a powerful tool to refurbish our connection with the objects, the people, and the whole world we live in. Ultimately, Ro tries to demonstrate the inexhaustible value of taking care of each other and its everlasting power even “at the end of the world”.In the dark times, should the stars also go out? is a question the artist forwards to the audience in their most recent work. A meaningful tower of ornaments, shapes, and symbols made out of ceramics which stays in close correlation with the functionality of a candle holder. The work invites the audience to participate through the use of candles to find togetherness within a shared experience and moment.
