Lot Benjamins

Lot Benjamins’s work comes out of a strong urge to create connections between people.  She creates a space where the participants can become teachers for each other. In her open and welcoming space, the participants receive the same authority and responsibility over the space as she does. The materiality in the work comes forth out of how the participants interact with each other and the space. Lot’s doesn’t perceive herself as an educator but instead wants to create a space where participants could become educators as they see fit. It’s a space which lends itself to the possibility of being filled up.

Lot’s caravan is both playful and nomadic which fits how she is both in close and distant relation to the participants. She is close in how she opens the space and welcomes everyone. On the other hand, her hands-off approach gives the participants the freedom to use the space how they like. She takes the theory of the ‘commons’ and uses it in a more accessible and practically applicable form. Step into the caravan and join the party.
