Hankyul Jeong

Working with seaweed and glass, Hankyul Jeong is a South Korean artist who relocated to the Netherlands four years ago. The experience of cultural transition led her to appreciate food's diverse meanings in different societies. She now views food not just as a source of sustenance, but also as a catalyst for culture and community. In her work, Hankyul uses the Dutch term for seaweed, "Zeewier," and incorporates it into her language. While Zeewier has gained popularity as a material for construction, animal feed, and dyeing, it is a familiar ingredient for Hankyul, who grew up with it.

To bring her artistic vision to life, Hankyul crafts interactive installations that fuse art and culinary delights in one sensory experience. Her edible artworks, which she presents during exhibitions, invite her audience to participate and savour the flavours of Zeewier. For a playful touch, she fashions an enchanting landscape from melted crockery and sheets, invoking the natural splendour of seaweed. The fluidity of the glass adds a whimsical dimension to the exhibition, making it an awe-inspiring spectacle. Each overlapping shape prompts the viewer to anticipate the flavours hidden within, tantalising their taste buds. Hankyul prioritises sustainability and utilises recycled glass in her artwork.
