In search of renewed relevance of classical music for young audiences

  • Music

Violist Álvaro Munoz Perera is graduating from the Master Classical Music at ArtEZ in Zwolle. In the video below, he talks about his mission: recognize that classical music has to look for new ways to appeal to young audiences. “We have to realize that classical music is no longer appealing to younger audiences. We have to take the context into account as well as the younger audiences in order to actualize it. I’m now more aware that we need to stop, think, and adjust what we’re doing.”

Álvaro says that he’s been focusing on performative arts and how to apply them in classical music. “I’m looking for the audience to be less passive and more communicative with me. So, I’m forcing them to take decisions in this performance. The purpose of this is to have the audience be more involved in the performance. They have the ability to come close to me and spin this zoetrope. They have the ability to move around. And they can decide how to follow me and when to follow me. Because I’m not giving them instructions.” He says that classical musicians usually tell the audience what to do. And with this type of performance, Álvaro wants the audience to have more chances to make decisions themselves.
