The 4th Location

Sound can reach us across distances. Literally: for many years, practitioners from different fields have devoted themselves to the travel of sounds, music, and various locations. The recording and distributing of music is nothing new and has often driven sonic technological innovation.
The 4th Location follows similar waves of thought. This project connects highly skilled music students and professionals across distances: the platform ensures that all Academy of Music students can play live together, without being together physically. And that is wonderful, because great creative potential is isolated when specialists are separated in many different locations. 4th Location lays essential foundations for collaborations and gives access to a much more comprehensive range of abilities and talents. For example, a student from Enschede can record an orchestra in Zwolle while also recording a jazz session in Arnhem. The sound studios of the three locations that make up the ArtEZ Academy of Music (Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle) are connected, allowing students to make multi-track recordings that can be edited and mixed later on. Composers, musicians, teachers, and students can all come together in this ‘fourth location.’
This innovation enables a new form of teamwork. It opens up towards making connections to other cities, in different countries or continents. It allows communities to sustain valuable relationships and collaborations across distances.
