Composing the New Carpet

Designers cannot change the world on their own, but as visionary field workers they can provide the initial impetus. For Composing the New Carpet, ArtEZ Future Makers challenged designers and design students to respond to some of the key challenges in the Dutch carpet industry based on their own expertise, experience and interests. The research yielded fascinating results: from printable carpet tiles and carpet yarns made from cellulose derived from algae to carpets that grow using fermentation processes or that visualise the heat or radio waves present in a room. The results offer particularly interesting future scenarios, which will inspire the industry to take important steps towards a more sustainable society for people and nature.
