„I care about nature and our planet a lot.. That´s what inspires and drives me as an artist.“

Master research: In my master's studies at ArtEZ Arnhem from 2021 to 2023, I mainly researched free improvisation and the combination of it with composed material that functions as a guide and framework for improvisation. My constant companion was the question, "How many pre-decided factors does it need to allow for the most freedom of expression within that set environment and to still "qualify" as a composition?".Within free improvisation, I focused mainly on a textural approach towards my instrument and sound-making, working with preparations and extensions of the drum set.

The creations you will hear in the link below tonight are the outcome of my research from the last two years, having different shades of pre-decided (composed) materials and freedom, providing the framework for this sonic journey. Some of these compositions have only written instructions, some work with written and graphic instructions and others are "traditionally" notated in the Western system with five lines.

Final Presentation: Exoplanet, Where are we going?

Maria Isolina Cozzani - violin
Matteo Traverso - modular synthesizer, digital synthesizers and sound processors
Rocco Romano - guitar
Frederik Taubenheim - prepared guitar & synthesizer
Pascal Burbach - drums, compositions & concept

(start at 18:58, but the first sound was hard to hear in the livestream)

About me/Inspiration:

After starting my musical journey in orchestras, turning to rock/punk and metal bands, I eventually was intrigued by Jazz and Improvised Music when studying for my bachelor´s in Maastricht from 2017-2021. Ultimately, I longed and searched for more freedom - for myself and the other players involved when playing my compositions.

The focus in my master´s became on freeing my music and playing from conventions - thinking and researching outside the box - not relying on expected structures and pre-walked paths, but finding and eventually walking my own ones.

What I cherish the most in Free Improvised Music is the dedication to the produced sounds and aesthetics, and the honesty and clarity with which you have to act and express.

The research process of getting involved with this approach of playing/creating sound showed me that it is way more complex than it seems from the outside. There is no room to hide behind licks or other tricks; everything goes way deeper than that, which I think you can feel in the audience - this deep connection of the players to their instrument(s) and their unfiltered expression.
