Thanks to his Tormenta collection, Jef Montes, an alumnus of ArtEZ Fashion Design, is one of the 10 fashion award nominees at the 33rd edition of the Hyères Festival International, which will be held from 26 until 30 April in Hyères in the south of France. The prestigious Hyères fashion awards are annually bestowed to emerging talents from the world of fashion. Winning the award may be the stepping stone to a successful career in the industry.

Tormenta collection
This September, Jef Montes presented his Tormenta collection at the Paris Fashion Week for the first time. The collection is inspired by the maritime sector. Jef Montes: "I have studied materials that are applied in shipbuilding. I have applied materials like nylon, carbon fibre and glass fibre to create new materials. My grandfather Gabriël inspired me to develop patterns for Tormenta. When he was young, we worked on various shark-fishing boats in the south of Spain. A few years ago, he gave me a miniature boat he had built by hand. That inspired me and that was when I started developing Tormenta. I have developed materials that emerge like a storm around the body and propel it, like a boat that is assailed by a storm." The ingenious and technical fabrics he uses in his designs have been created in partnership with the TextielLab in Tilburg.

Hyères fashion awards
Past Hyères fashion award winners include Viktor & Rolf, Christian Wijnants and Anthony Vaccarello. Winners receive a cash prize and are given the opportunity to collaborate with renowned brands and studios.
