PLAY MAIDS  - a visual, dark, poetic music theatre peep show directed by Mart van Berckel - has won the audience award at the 2016 Körber Studio Junge Regie festival. This represents a real boost for both music theatre director Mart van Berckel and the two performers Robin Kuiper and Anne Freriks, all of whom graduated from ArtEZ Music Theatre this year.

Körber Studio Junge Regie is an annual festival for young directing students. The organisers invite one production from each regional training programme in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In the past, many successful directors have put on their first performances here. The 13th edition of the festival was held in the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, in partnership with Theaterakademie Hamburg. ArtEZ Music Theatre was invited as a foreign guest training programme because this year's theme was 'music theatre forms'.

At the festival, thirteen productions were put on, along with a side programme of after-show discussions, public debates, introductions and master classes. All the productions were judged by an expert jury. In the jury report, PLAY MAIDS was praised for its adherence to form, sensibility and musicality. In addition, the topicality of the theme, the use of language and the design were cited as strong points. As a foreign guest production, PLAY MAIDS was not competing for the jury award, which this year was won by the director Anna Frick.

You can still catch the performance at the Postheater in Arnhem on 24 and 25 June and at the ITs Festival at De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam on 26 June.
