Master of Music Therapy project: giving young refugees a voice

“What I hope to achieve is to give these boys a voice. And to try to make other people in my environment aware of the situation of the refugees.” For her master's degree in Music Therapy at ArtEZ, Digna Huinink created ten songs together with young refugees in (on?) Lesbos. In the video below, she shares her experiences. “During my master's I started doing research in (on?) Lesbos. When I worked there with refugees and music, I noticed how special this really was. What this meant for them. ”

Digna Huinink did a songwriting project with young people aged 15 to 20. The ten songs appeared on the album called Songs of Moria. Digna says: “In the songs you hear a broken heart, family they miss, and about the hard life of a refugee. But you also hear their talent and their wishes for the future.” The album is called Moria, after the camp where these young refugees are staying. It’s also the place where Digna wrote the songs together with the refugees.

The Master of Music Therapy at ArtEZ is nationally recognized by the NVAO (National Flemish Accreditation Organization). You develop your musical, clinical and research skills. There’s a special focus on neuroscience, including a Neurologic Music Therapy fellowship training. You research the therapeutic effect of music on people's health. And you communicate your results to a wide audience. After you graduate, you can start working in various places, such as in elderly care, mental health care, developing countries, or you can start working as a researcher.
