Esmay Groot Koerkamp, who graduated from AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art and Idustry in 2016, is one of three winners of the 2017 Fiep Westendorp Incentives Award. The other winners are Tja Ling and Nastia Cistakova. The Fiep Westendorp Foundation allocates these awards every two years to three young illustrators. Each winner receives a prize of 20,000 Euro.

The objective of the Fiep Westendorp Incentives Awards is to give young illustrators the opportunity to develop an exceptional project which, without financial support, they would otherwise not be in a position to do. The jury for the award consisted of: Ted van Lieshout, Gioia Smid and Max Kisman.

The jury report on Esmay’s work reads as follows:
Esmay Groot Koerkamp (24) wishes to make different sections of a book, each one to provide an answer to the question ‘why humans exist’ from a different perspective. In this project entitled ‘Kaos’, drawings are combined with writing and videos. The jury is extremely impressed with her large-scale, breathtaking work, and is very keen to support this project. Esmay graduated from AKI ArtEZ (Academy of Art and Industry, faculty of Art and Design) in Enschede in 2016.
