Dialogues: A Musical Approach on US Election Day 2020
A Musical piece, born out of a desire between its three performers to better understand the current political landscape and the impacts of it: That is what Dialogues, performed by MA students Classical Music and Jazz&Pop in Zwolle, is.

You hear Skye Kinlaw (MA student Classical Music) on the violin, Haite Schootstra (MA student Jazz & Pop) on the saxophone and Román Sánchez Alonso (MA student Jazz & Pop) on the trombone. The three artists aim to share their impressions and feelings in an interdisciplinary way about the ongoing US Presidential election. All three come from different countries and backgrounds, and therefore understand the current political events from unique and different perspectives.
Embracing Irritation
They aim to use sound and the stage as tools to gain a deeper understanding of each other, as well as the consequences of avoiding that understanding. You will hear various clips from speeches of cultural commentary. These were purposely curated to act as a frame for each perspective and are not intended as a specific political stance or party criticism. You will also hear some sounds or effects that may irritate you; this is on purpose. The artists ask that you embrace those feelings of irritation as a part of the performance and help them frame your experience of the piece.
Examine your perspective
The artists hope you will use the performance to dig a little deeper and examine your own perspectives, as well as examining them with others, perhaps through the following questions: Is this really the only way to go forward? What is the importance and what are the consequences of committing to hear each other? Do we discuss to be proven right or be proven wrong; or do we listen to be taught something?
So keep these questions in mind when listening to the piece:
