Specific drums admission requirements

In addition to the general admission criteria, there are specific admission requirements for the drums. You prepare five pieces that are slightly different in character and tempo. You are free to choose the style of the pieces, so you can play any kind of jazz, latin or pop music as well as a mix of various styles. During the audition, you will perform a minimum of two and a maximum of three of the prepared pieces. You do this preferably with your own band or, if that is impossible, with students of the Academy of Music.

Important aspects, which can be part of the audition and are taken into account in the assessment, are the following:

  • playing themes of simple standards; accompanying them with a steady tempo, functionally and with a sense of form and style, and playing solos over them;
  • achieving a sound and a sound balance that matches the style;
  • playing in a jazz and/or rock style with appropriate timing;
  • the entrance examination may also include a prepared snare drum etude, an à vue reading section consisting of a snare drum etude, a coordination reading exercise (e.g. rudiments distributed over all components of the percussion) and a reading improvisation exercise.
