ArtEZ students are among the happiest students in the Netherlands

ARNHEM – The recently published results of the National Student Survey show that overall, students at ArtEZ University of the Arts are a lot happier with their study experience than their fellow students at other institutes of higher professional education (HBO) in the Netherlands. While the average rating Dutch students gave their study experience (on a five-point scale) was 3.82, ArtEZ got a score of well above 4.

Students were particularly happy with our performance in the areas of ‘challenging education’ and ‘lecturers’, where we scored well above 4, whereas the average sore for both these areas was around 3. Students feel they are being challenged to develop their potential to the fullest, and given room to delve more deeply into subjects.

Marjolijn Brussaard, President of the Executive Board of ArtEZ: “All our members of staff and lecturers work very hard day in day out to provide students the best possible study experience. It is great to see that we have improved on nearly all aspects. That means our students are happy with our courses and with ArtEZ – and we are proud of that.”

Internationalisation
Internationalisation was the aspect for which Dutch higher professional education got the lowest rating: a score of 3. Brussaard: “We feel that our score on this aspect, which is just above the meagre nation-wide average, is unsatisfactory. Although we have improved compared to last year.” ArtEZ is increasingly becoming a serious option for foreign students, so internationalisation needs to be further embedded in our ArtEZ-wide components.

National Student Survey
The National Student Survey is an annual survey among students in Dutch higher education. This year, over 744,000 students in 73 institutes of higher professional education and universities were invited to complete the survey. The overall response rate was 36.2%. At ArtEZ, over 54% of students completed the survey.

In the National Student Survey, students are asked to rate their study experience in a range of areas, including with respect to lecturers and the facilities in the building, on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 representing ‘very dissatisfied’ and 5 ‘very satisfied’.
