ArtEZ Conference on the positioning of Art Research - Call for papers

Art Research Conference on 18 and 19 November in Arnhem
Art Research Conference on 18 and 19 November in Arnhem

On 18 and 19 November 2016 ArtEZ University of the Arts will be organizing a two-day conference on the positioning of art research, which lies between academic research and practice-based research.

During this conference ArtEZ, as a University of the Arts, wants to consider the question “What is art research?”. The question will be considered from three perspectives:

  • Artistic research (visual and performative arts)
  • Design research (architecture and design)
  • Art educational research.

The aim is to enter into a dialogue with one another about the enormous range of answers to the question of what we consider to be art research. In addition, we also want to discuss how we conduct research, how we want to further develop this research, what the outcome of this kind of research is in terms of products, practices, knowledge and concepts. Inspiring examples and frames of reference will be presented and we will discuss where we stand in comparison to other institutions of higher education, both nationally and internationally.

Research in and through the arts has acquired its rightful place in international higher education, as it has in the Netherlands. In the sector plan for arts education in the Netherlands (2010) Robbert Dijkgraaf emphatically stated once again that art education in the Netherlands possesses unique opportunities for developing a type of research that is specific to the arts. ArtEZ has taken up this idea and has even made conducting art research a key part of its policy. This is becoming more and more visible in symposiums and lectures, publications and seminars, the BA programme (Undergraduate School), the MA programme and the professorships (Graduate School).

Call for papers

We are calling on everybody, artists and academics, students and lecturers, to make their contributions in order to further and strengthen the position of art research within higher education. We invite you to give a presentation on a subject that is relevant to the themes of the conference. The presentation can either be a short lecture (20 minutes at most) or a poster presentation. There is also room for performances or other kinds of presentation. If you are planning to stage a performance or another kind of presentation, we kindly ask you to make your research method explicit (for instance in an explanatory text). A discussion of the research, the research methodology applied and the findings will be a key component of these talks and presentations. For more information on the conference, please see the more extensive attachment to this call for papers.
