About the work of Arjan van Helmond
The room we live in, the stairs we climb every day, a drum set, balloons, vases. The work of Arjan van Helmond (1971) centres on the everyday things of life. Van Helmond does not create a narrative with these daily scenes but rather a new kind of realism in which recognition and alienation go hand in hand. The jury is deeply impressed by the manner in which he manages 'to elevate the commonplace to moments of silence, meditation and beauty'. Museum Kranenburgh will display a selection of recent gouaches on canvass and paper in relation to some early works.
