Jiaheng Shen | ArtEZ finals

Drummer Jiaheng Shen, from China, is a Master’s student in Jazz & Pop. His research focuses on the warm, resonant sound of hand-playing on the drum set—a technique rooted in primal and Latin percussion. 
In this final Performence, he journeys through jazz from the 1940s to the 1960s. Building upon the rare examples set by pioneers, he explores and seeks to expand the expressive possibilities of this direct, physical approach within the distinct acoustic tradition of each era.
