The work of Romy Berends analyses the physical constructions, structures and patterns within built environments. Think of building sites, industrial areas, appartment blocks or infrastructure. These places provide us a certain grip, security or guide. They have a use in our daily lives and therefore consist of social, cultural or architectural rules. Her work strips these places and their objects of their rules and exposes them solely by their facade. Berends translates their physical and material appearances in an oddly manner, in which an abstract aesthetic often prevails.
