WHEN LINES BECOME VOLUME

Could abstraction be used as a design tool?

I developed an archive of abstract illustrations that explored the use of intuitive expression as a design tool. Using paper folding as a way of creating volume, the illustrations became templates from which I could design a collection of ceramic objects.

Following my interest in the term undulation; “the action of moving smoothly up and down”, I created an archive of abstract brush and ink illustrations as a way of exploring my own interpretation of abstract expression. By using this archive as the source of my designs, I translated undulating strokes into designed fold patterns, that when crafted, turned lines into volume.

By exploring the use of paper folding to create structure, I used my abstract exploration as a tool to design a collection of porcelain objects that seek to propose intuitive expression as a way of arriving to new design aesthetics.”

Pietro Iannuzzi is a designer by way of craft, with an admiration for the romanticism behind the dialogue that can take place between man and material. The touch of the artist, directly visible in the object before the viewer, is a value that, to him, can be a way to tell the story from the perspective of the craft that shapes an object.

In his work, he strives to capture the essence of the dynamic movement that can be described as “undulation”. To capture undulation, is to capture the way that an object relates to its surroundings in movement. With a focus on ceramic craft, the processes that Iannuzzi takes manipulate surface as an attempt to replicate the mesmerising entity that is movement.
