Paul Heusinkveld (Amersfoort, Netherlands 1997)

In Paul Heusinkveld’s practice, he is searching for the fragility of men. What is so important to him is to have faults, so there is room and space for gentler, more human emotions than just anger and aggression. Heusinkveld’s work looks for the position of men and himself as a man. This concept stems from clumsiness or, “Knulligheid”. It represents the weakness of a man who is not masculine. This de-masculinity is a quality to access the sweet and kind aspects of a man should be taken seriously. What if you tried to fail? Not as a sacrifice, but as a new man: an emancipated man. The “Loser” as new man of current society. The successes of man are then achievable within failing. If you fail within failing, you won. Heusinkveld’s plea is for a defective man that is comfortable to enter the “Loser-ship” realm. Hiding within this theme, Heusinkveld tackles themes such as power, cuteness and sincerity.

His work starts with situations and stories where this so-called loser becomes apparent and thrives. He translates this into works that create a world where losing is winning. He shows a lot of admiration and affection towards towards these worlds, but at the same time, he is taking a piss on them. The medium in which he works differs per work. He likes to use ready-made object with real made things, creating this bricolage of materials. Within the use of materials and (lack of) craftsmanship, the clumsiness and loser-ship, comes forward within the work.
