The Wave(s)

Do you ever wonder if your life would have been just slightly different, had you made different decisions in the past? The way our personality develops, and the way we perceive our environment, is influenced by many things and many people. Someone else might make different decisions than you would, see a similar situation in a very different light. Therefore, a story is never one, but many, layered by a lot of different perspectives.

With the use of colorful video’s, soundscapes and graphical elements, this installation is a visual translation and representation of ‘The Waves’, written by Virginia Woolf. Her method of writing, in a ‘stream-of-consciousness’, reflects on concepts such as time, decision-making and identity through the inner monologues of six characters. In this installation, these six characters are brought to life.

Through a collection of audiovisual material, the viewer can witness different perspectives of a (non-linear) story, in which each of the characters is represented individually, yet are intertwined with and correspondent of one another. As a designer, I find it important to consider the audience you are designing for, and the story that your project represents. This installation offers the viewer a possibility to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, consider another’s voice in a story. Yet it also offers a view of all of the different versions of themselves to be interpreted. Virginia Woolf’s story to me is a perfect example of ‘the other side of the story', and how personality influences one’s perspective.
