Domestic Bliss

"The concept of the home and its purpose for meeting the inhabitants’ needs and therefore enabling belonging, has been a reoccurring topic in architecture. In the 1960s architect and theorist John Habraken introduced this topic in his writings, criticizing mass housing and its repetitiveness, and simultaneously asking for user participation in its design process. A couple of years after, architect Herman Hertzberger designed the experimental Diagoon Houses in Delft as an answer to this missing adaptability in mass housing, creating a new way of looking at domestic spaces and how our needs relate to them.

Nowadays, this topic gained even more relevance as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Being quarantined at home, or isolated in only one room, changed the correlation between the occupants and their living spaces. I began to understand the significance of adaptability in a home, which is something that I was missing during these uncertain times, while also realizing how our needs can suddenly change at any given moment. Creating a fluid, adaptable space is what I am trying to accomplish to make this experience of the ever-changing relationship between the inhabitants and their home more effortless and approachable."
