Nicky van den Breul

Nicky van den Breul (Utrecht, Netherlands 1997) 

50% Beer; diluted with 50% water.  

400 millilitres of distilled vinegar and about 4 milligrams sugar.  

Clay powder, rabbit skin glue; diluted with water.  

Skimmed milk; diluted with equal parts milk and water.   

Within her practice, Nicky van den Breul is exploring the limits of paint and the way it can be composed. These experiments lead to very fragile pieces, ironically made from materials that should be functionally eternal and withstand the passing of time. Nicky is a painter with a special interest in the chemical composition of paint and the origin of material. Within her work, she is asking the question of preservation, authorship and raises the position of the material to one that is equal to her own.   

The pigments used are crafted from specific materials only found in unique locations or situations, adding a nostalgic factor that is also be seen in restoration & preservation. The techniques she is using come from a deep desire for the past; to preserve and to be preserved. To Nicky, the work doesn’t have to keep the same form, as it continues to change. To care and to pay attention to the desire to understand how something works and how it responds; testing its limits. Something susceptible to the ongoing passage of time, forming something truly ephemeral.
