Jelle van Kuilenburg (Tiel, Netherlands 2000)

We seem to have lost the magic in everyday life. Through his practice, Jelle van Kuilenburg explores everyday sites of enchantment and attempts to re-enchant the viewer. His practice provides an ongoing research into materiality and healing/enchantment. He offers a methodological approach to everyday life and a guide through the metaphoric wasteland we call life, as well as a coping mechanism for the absurdity of existence. Encountered along the way, are archetypal symbols which provide waypoints and a narration of the world around us. Through this process of healing and re-enchantment, he believes that it is possible to revive the spirit that is right behind the surface of the material that is all around us.

His visual language of symbolism carries a similar sentiment to children’s books illustrations, and has certain cartoonish qualities. It emphasises a notion of play, which is essential to discuss heavy or uneasy topics more easily. These topics cannot be ignored if we are aiming towards healing. An enchanted vision certainly makes living easier; however, this is all that can be provided. Between being born and dying is only a bridge called life. A bridge is offered for you to walk upon with some music to listen to along the way. However, we are all just whistling in the face of death. No matter how you twist and turn the end station remains, it is up to you if you want to dance to these tunes.
