Zora Sel (Apeldoorn, Netherlands 1999)

In her practice, Zora Sel questions the relationship we have with our things. While being one together with the things surrounding her, she tries to identify the ongoing and ever-changing structures between herself and these subjects. Her paintings show fragmentized imagery of these things put in distorted compositions. Through these ruptures, she attempts to show how she can be the director of shaping the roles and the influences of that. Through this research, she concluded that you cannot be a subject surrounded by possessions. To think of things as possessions, play a hierarchy that is contra-productive towards the being able to shape the storylines within the possessions towards the self. By placing a different perspective in her paintings, she focuses on what these mean in relation to perception and behaviour of the things.

Becoming aware of looking or being looked at, is an important part in the process of a person becoming one between their things. By subjectification and objectification happening synchronically, Zora wants to provoke the sensation of becoming a thing.
