The Thread

Arriving from my fascination for vintage machines that I can turn into graphic design tools, I bought a Brother KH910 knitting machine. Hacking this machine makes me able to turn bits into knits; one pixel gets transformed into one stitch. I find the treshold between these two very exciting; the obsolete machine transforms into a vehicle for contemporary graphic design. As this machine is so easily hackable, I consider it as a piece of open source hardware. I discovered a whole community that exists around this one single knitting machine and slowly became part of it.

The Thread explores the communal spirit of learning a craft. By looping together knowledge i've gained thanks to this community, The Thread aims to feed knowledge back into the community again.

About Femke Jurrissen

Femke Jurrissen is a maker with a fascination for tools, let it be physical tools (penplotters, knitting machines) or digital tools (scripts, plugins, softwares). Her work most of the times evolves around the exploration of a certain tool. Within this explorative attitude, she likes to question and surpass a tool its limitations. In order to do so her approach has a very hacky / DIY attitude. This attitude also makes her find joy in seeking for lifehacks wherever she can. Her latest lifehack is a vertically cut open Cola bottle which functions as a mudguard on her racing bike. Femke has been able to develop her interests further when doing her internship at Open Source Publishing in Brussels, where she got infected with a passion for vintage penplotters. For inquiries (for both jobs as lifehacks) are welcome!
