Yabancılar

While struggling to come to terms with becoming an outsider to my home town, İstanbul, I was introduced to a collection of slides taken by Dutch tourists visiting İstanbul, May 1979. Yabancılar is the outcome of my exploration into this found footage, as a Turkish native, in the form of a photobook. The photographs they took are littered with political fragments that end up being the backdrop of their holiday. While they observe and document the city and its people thoroughly they still remain outsiders, strangers and foreigners - or yabancılar in Turkish. The narrative of the book reforms the gaze of these outsiders, shows what is seen by them and what stays in their periphery during a volatile time in Turkish history.

About Doğa Deniz Gönüllü

Doğa Deniz Gönüllü (1992) is a graphic designer interested in printed matter. She was born and raised in İstanbul, Turkey before moving to the Netherlands. Though she is interested in self-initiated research-based projects that can take many different shapes, her main focus is book design and the relationship between the artist and the designer. She loves the idea that a book can take many forms and serve many purposes while staying throughly recognisable and familiar; that it is an object in constant flux but never changing. Her favourite types of books are photography and archival books though she enjoys comic books as well.

Doğa is pronounced [doˈa] - the ğ is silent.
