Escaping in Architecture
My project finds its roots in my love for stories, fantasy and imagination. As I grew older, this love turned into a method for escaping the unpleasant happenings in my daily life. My research paper focuses on the concept of 'escapism', the psychological urge to seek escape from reality. I mostly find this escape in the magical world of games. With their bright colours, thought-out narratives and engaging environments they offer the perfect space for temporary joy and relief.
You know how when you humans are really into something and it feels like you're in another place? Feels like you're in the zone, right? [...] Well, this is the zone. It's the space between the physical and spiritual.

Even though this digital space is a great tool for escape, I've also noticed their potential to distance us from reality and disrupt our focus on responsibilities in our everyday lives. That's why, as a spatial researcher, I see a lot of potential in my practice. Architecture can be a great tool for creating a more mindful escape since it is grounded in physical reality. It can impact our senses, evoke powerful emotions and craft immersive atmospheres.
With the knowledge I've acquired over the past months, I aim to make a positive impact on the tangible world around us. In my graduation project, I reimagined a chemotherapy treatment room, infusing it with elements that stimulate this feeling of escape, offering respite amidst the challenges of illness. It's a project that embodies not only academic exploration but also a deeply personal quest to bring solace to those confronting the darkness of disease.
