Place memory: abstract and pass on

What is place? A place is developed through attachment to unique, distinctive, and cherished aspects of space, which greatly influences people's emotional connection to a space, making it from space to place, and from place to home. However, this sense of place could be lost with dramatic changes caused by several factors: natural disasters, urban renewal, and so on.

I believe the key to retaining the sense of a place is to abstract and pass on its memories. By conducting experiments with transparency, old objects, and spatial traces, I developed a methodology, or a toolbox, with four principles: Copy, Layer, Reflection, and Hint. This method could be applied to different sites to create architectural elements which work as containers of place memories. With these elements created, a place, along with its memories becomes a living organism that can constantly reshape itself into various spatial configurations while telling its past.

Goal/Ambition
Reusing existing spaces and adapting them to the present is not a new trend. Instead, it has been a strategy adopted by many architects throughout the world with numerous methods developed and applied. However, many place most emphasis on the future purpose of a place while neglecting its past.

The goal of my research is to explore the relationships between place and architecture, and their boundaries, in which I realize that the existence of a place depends on the space users’ perspectives of the users of the space towards it in the sense of time. By bringing in the concept of memories and time, several moments in time of a place could be sensible at present moment. Architecture is not merely a spatial arrangement at a moment but a flexible place and the collective of past and present.

In the future, I wish to complete a more well-developed toolbox that could be applied to places facing inevitable changes and to realize the practical goal of the research: passing on the place memories, not only for those who already have emotional connections to the place but also for newcomers, to share the same perspectives towards the significance of those places.
