Inhabiting a Skin

The form of built space has evolved alongside our developing creative skills. These changes affect the lifestyle aspect. How we live back in the past is completely different from us nowadays.

We need space to do our activities, which means the more complex lifestyle we have, the more space and living compartments we need a room for each different activities are required such as; bedroom, living room, office, gym, dining room, toilet, and so on. The requirement of each individual also vary. We can see that the house planning of each housing unit is different from the others. Our house is not the same as our neighbor’s.

This is where flexible architecture becomes important. A potential solution to make an efficient space that offers completely different lifestyle than we used to know.

Goal/Ambition

As an (interior-)architect, I am always interested in looking for new ways to live that are distinct from the norm; innovating and developing from the past while adapting to the future; addressing the needs of a rapidly changing society in terms of social, political, cultural, and environmental concerns.

Whether we recognize it or not, architecture plays a significant role in our daily lives. The most visible is the physical space in which we live and how we use it. It also shapes us as individuals, allowing us to become who we are. There is a connection between space and living organisms that cannot be separated.

My research project aims to highlight that flexibility offers a potential solution in making an efficient space that may answer the problem of space insufficiency and offers a completely different lifestyle than we are used to know. During my process, I worked with various flexible materials and discovered their possibilities to expand, reduce, distort, and create space. By adopting skin as a part of the human body and as a living organism that is flexible and able to respond to various conditions, and by translating it to elements of architecture - the floor, the wall, and the ceiling of space to create functions for various occasions. A system that allows freedom and unexpected usage of space.
