In between regional and global

As there are both advantages and disadvantages to globalization, critical regionalism can play a big role in balancing the traditional values of the region and the progressive ease that modernity is able to provide. Architecture is also one of the main fields being globalized. This transformation is criticized, by the experts, at some levels positive yet at many levels negative. One of the main concerns is that although there is a rich background and a specific characteristic known for Persian architecture, it is being faded over time. This is because globalization is becoming dominant over tradition and the values are being changed or better said, neglected.

Therefore, nowadays, we can almost not feel any Iranian heritage specifically when walking in important urban spaces such as modern shopping centers that are closed boxes turning their back to the cities, while the bazaars are still taking a very humble position. Yet. Since the convenience provided by modernity on some levels is undeniable, it is better to find a balance between our regional heritage and global modernity.

In this research, I have tried to design a shopping shell. A modern bazaar that embraces the city. For this purpose, I used a small unit from a very traditional 2D pattern, as a representative of regional values, turned it into 3D, and created a space by repeating the same form. Repetition as the main quality of patterns can be experienced in various layers in my design.
